We'll Pay a Second Shooter $200/hr If They Do This
So many times we've hired second shooters and they only shoot exactly what we tell them to.
They may be decent at shooting what you need, but when there's downtime, they immediately started scrolling on their phone. Completely disconnected from the day.
Even though this person was talented, it wasn't fun having them there. And it usually wasn't worth the shots they captured.
How to Get Hired Again
It's not hard to treat the wedding like it's your own. Even if you're second shooting for the extra income, treating jobs like they're your own wedding will ultimately get you hired again.
That means you should be looking for ways to improve the day, not just the photography or videography.
Grab the Shots AND Serve Well
If you came into the wedding day shooting a reflection of my personality and character, can grab the shots I need and ALSO serve the other vendors well, I'd pay upwards of $150-200 an hour for THAT second shooter.
And I know a lot of other leads who would do the same.
If you're waiting to break through the second shooter struggles and get called back time and time again, always look how you can go above and beyond.
We Took a Chance: OUR RECENT STORY
Take Jake Kazakevich for example. I took a chance and hired him for a wedding. Never met him before! Not only did he capture what I needed, but he felt free to capture creative shots that may have taken some time or effort to capture.
This really pushed the film to the next 10% because as a lead, you typically are busy with capturing everything you know will make a film live up to your standards.
He definitely over delivered and I have hired him multiple times now!
Take Initiative
On top of this, Jake proactively would help with assistance in gear, run to the next location instead of walk and grab waters for the bride and groom without even having to ask him to.
This is the type of person you want on every wedding with you. A true teammate.
I'd rather find 20 Jakes around the United States and pay them well than hire cheap work that may help a little on the day, but ultimately doesn't help strengthen your business or your brand.
