How to Make the Most of Every Second Shooting Job
If you're new to this or looking for ways to enhance your experience, you're in the right place. Today, I'll be sharing some valuable insights and strategies to help you get the most out of every second shooting gig! Whether you're looking to build your portfolio or sharpen your skills, these tips will set you up for success.
Understand the Wedding Schedule
Before you arrive to the wedding, familiarize yourself with the wedding timeline. Knowing the schedule inside out allows you to anticipate key moments and be in the right place at the right time. This prep helps you capture those fleeting moments, but more importantly it gives the lead photographer confidence you know what you’re doing and you’re ready for anything to happen. Also, this makes the lead or the company you’re working for look really good and want to hire you over and over again!
Bring Backup Equipment
Technical glitches can happen, even to the best of us. Bringing backup gear such as extra memory cards, batteries, and perhaps even a second camera can save you from unexpected surprises. This foresight shows your professionalism and preparedness. Being ready for anything means you can keep shooting no matter what happens, ensuring a comprehensive coverage of the event and building trust with the lead photographer.
Focus on Genuine Moments
While posed pictures are essential, candid shots often tell the most compelling stories. Keep an eye out for genuine emotions, like the laughter during a toast or a teary-eyed hug between friends. These authentic moments add depth and emotion to the wedding album. It’s so easy to get caught up in the pretty shots. While a grandma is over in the corner gazing at her granddaughter…we still choose to take 10 minutes to photograph rings?!
Reflect and Seek Feedback
After each shoot, take a moment to reflect on what went well and what could be improved. Seeking feedback from the lead photographer offers insights that you might not have considered and helps you grow. Constructive criticism is invaluable in honing your skills and getting better with each assignment. Being open to feedback demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning, qualities that will serve you well in your photography career! If you’re on Second Society, don’t wait until you get a review for feedback. Reaching out ensures you get the most honest feedback with the most positive critic.
Cheers,
Jimmy

“I LOVE Second Society. It has been an absolute game-changer! I've been able to connect with so many awesome shooters who match my vibe and shooting style. Truly the best people are on this platform. It's opened up so many doors (just got back from a week shooting in Cabo thanks to Second Society)! Cannot recommend this platform enough!”
