How To Build A Strong Second Shooter Portfolio

Starting your journey in wedding photography as a second shooter is a smart move, offering valuable experience and a glimpse into the fast-paced event world. To land these gigs, a solid portfolio is essential especially on Second Society!

How to Create a Great Portfolio:

Start Small

Begin with what you’ve got. Even if it’s not wedding-focused, leverage any photography experience you’ve had.

However, this is a fairly weak excuse and you don’t want to stay here long, if I’m being blunt.

There’s so many opportunities now a days that you can shoot for free for 1 month straight and build insane spec work for your instagram that will take you way further than just using what you have.

Pro Tip. DM 30 Photographers and tell them you want to shoot a BTS film of them for free to show on their instagram as long as they can shoot a couple of photos alongside of them for your portfolio.

NETWORK WITH PROS

Connect with local photographers or coordinators. Many professionals are open to having learners join them as second shooters or help them with styled shoots. You can find photographers or videographers in your area by heading to our website and tapping “find photographers” or “find videographers”

What To Include In Your Portfolio:

- Candid Moments: Genuine, emotional interactions that capture the event’s vibe.

- Details: Close-ups of rings, flowers, and decorations add richness to your work.

Participate in Styled Shoots

You said that already…Yeah because it’s powerful! Join styled shoots if you’re just starting out! These environments allow you to practice and add unique shots to your portfolio without the pressure of a real event.

Maintain Consistency and Versatility

Your editing style should be consistent, showcasing your artistic eye. Yet, also display your ability to handle various lighting situations, settings, and themes!

Include a Personal Bio

Add a personal touch with a bio section that talks about your love for photography, your working style, and about you! Don’t skimp out on this! People want to know WHO you are!

Building a portfolio goes beyond just collecting photos. It’s about telling your story and showing your commitment to your craft. By carefully selecting your work, connecting with industry pros, and consistently improving, you’ll be well on your way to securing more second shooter opportunities and growing as a photographer. Consistency and passion are your best allies on this journey!

Cheers,

Jimmy
